The Pencil Project was started in 1998 when a woman named Maria Vick came across a photo of some students from a small school in Africa. One of the students was holding a small pencil about the size of his thumb as if it was the most precious gift in the world. Ever since, the Pencil Project has been working to donate pencils to schools in third world countries.
The Girl Scouts are working to provide pencils and erasers to Fresh Start Academy in Eldoret, Kenya. The school has 300 students in grades K-12. They currently share one pencil for every two students. If you are interested in helping these students, please give one pack of pencils or erasers to your student to bring to school anytime during this week.
